On Saturday, March 12, 2011, Penn Premier Dental, located on the first floor of the Exton Square Mall, opened their offices to all Henderson High School students interested in being custom fitted for a mouth guard made at no charge. Over 100 HHS athletes participated in the offering! The day proved to be a great tribute to Andrew as so many were serviced by the generosity of Andrew’s dentists, Dr. Shamloo and Dr. Ram. We are so grateful for Penn Premier Dental’s generosity!
Andrew was a patient in their office for over 13 years and they are grieving his loss. In an effort to honor his life, his dedication to soccer and ice hockey, and his service to others, Dr. Shamloo and Dr. Ram dedicated this time and their office staff to fashion custom made mouth guards for Henderson High School students. Students were able to come in, without an appointment and get fitted for the personalized mouth guard. In just ten days they can return to pick up the device. No fees were charged at all. It was all done as a gift. These mouth guards are valued at over $150 each.
A well-designed custom mouth guard provides the greatest level of protection for an athlete as compared to either a stock, or boil-and-bite guard. The fit and comfort of a custom mouth guard, fashioned in a dentist’s office, offers several advantages. The more comfortable and unobtrusive a mouth guard is the greater the likelihood that the athlete will wear it at all times. Additionally, the retention of a custom guard can be expected to be superior and therefore produce less interference with speech and breathing than other types of guards. Research has also shown that custom made sports mouth guards can reduce instances of dental as well as head and neck injuries and the severity of concussions.
