RISE Farm Trip
On the afternoon of November 9th, 2019, 25 students, RISE Coordinator Angela Warfield, teacher Quinn Boyer and parent volunteers Anissa and Kareem from the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation’s RISE program visited Black Sheep Farm in Newtown Square, Pa. Upon arrival, students were greeted by property owners Larry and Renee Granger, who promptly reminded students to wear all of their additional clothing layers in order to prepare for the day’s activities.
The students and adults were separated into groups and began with either a hike or a tour of the farm. During the hike the Granger’s neighbor led the group through the back of the property to a serene creek, great for relaxing and fishing. Along the way, students were greeted by some of the animals who lived on the farm, including an enthusiastic donkey named Clementine.
During the tour of the farm, the Grangers led the groups around the farm, introducing students to chickens, goats, and horses while sharing interesting facts about them. The kids seemed to especially enjoy feeding the animals.
Students then got to enjoy other activities such as pumpkin painting, making friendship bracelets and playing games. In the evening; students were served a delicious meal prepared by professional cook, Baron McCall. As they enjoyed their meal, students watched a movie and socialized.
When the evening drew to a close, students were reminded that “many hands make light work” as they all pitched in to clean up.
Students, staff and volunteers alike all seemed to enjoy the fun, informative, special day at the farm!
