The 2015 Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Memorial Hockey Tournament took place over four nights at Ice Line on September 25th, 28th, October 2nd and October 5th. This year’s tournament, also known as the Hicksie Cup, included the following eight hockey teams: Henderson, West Chester East, Rustin, Conestoga, Downingtown East, Downingtown West, Unionville, and Great Valley.
The eight teams were divided into two Groups of four teams. The first three nights of the Hicksie Cup consisted of preliminary round play between the teams in each Group. At the conclusion of the first three nights of play a First and Second place team from each Group was determined based on wins and losses. The second place teams from each Group advanced to the Consolation Game while the first place teams from each Group qualified for the Championship Game. The Championship game and the Consolation game were both played on October 5th, the final night of the Hicksie Cup.
The Consolation Game was played between Henderson and Unionville at 6:30pm on Monday, October 5th. The game was very competitive and both teams played very well. Unionville was the better team that night and won the game 5 to 2.
The Championship Game featured an undefeated Downingtown East and an undefeated Rustin. Both teams had gone 3 and 0 during the preliminary round games to earn a spot in the final. The Championship Game took place at 8:15pm on Monday, October 5th, right after the conclusion of the Consolation Game. Both teams played an excellent, fast paced game that was evenly matched and easily the best game of the tournament. Downingtown East was able to hold off Rustin to win the game 1-0.
This was the second year Downingtown East had participated in the tournament and the first time winning the Hicksie Cup trophy. Downingtown East was presented the Cup right after the game and had the opportunity to skate around with it and take pictures with it. A ceremony took place on the ice after the game and each of the Downingtown East players and coaches received Foundation Gold Medals as a reward for their victory. Rustin earned a second place finish and each of their players and coaches received a Foundation Silver Medal for their efforts.
This year’s Hicksie Cup tournament raised over $5,800 for the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation. The overwhelming success of the 6th Annual Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Memorial Hockey Tournament was due to the tremendous support and assistance received from the eight high school hockey clubs that participated int he tournament and ice Line along with our sponsors: Griffith Insurance, Sani Sport of Pennsylvania, and 124 Marketplace (McCool Properties). The sponsors made it possible for the Foundation to give each of the players a specially designed tournament T-shirt.
The tournament was made possible due to the efforts of a special group of Foundation volunteers that included Elizabeth Cottle, Dan Knisely, Kevin Howe, Chris McCool and the McCool family, Willow Dysard, Mary Beth Miller, Adam DeAngelo, Pete Nush, and Regina DePaul. We would also like to thank Jim Anderson, and all of the hockey referees that volunteered their time to officiate all 14 games. A special thank you goes out to Irene Anderson and Drew Hagerty for jumping in to help the Foundation at a moment’s notice.
The money raised from this year’s hockey tournament will be used to underwrite Foundation programming including the Learn-To-Skate event that will take place in March 2016. We expect to bring approximately 100 kids from Chester to Ice Line to spend the afternoon learning to ice skate with 100 of the high school players that participated in the Hicksie Cup. If you’d like to assist with the 2016 Learn-To-Skate event, please consider signing up as a Foundation volunteer.
