John and Debbie Goebel did a fantastic job organizing and hosting the 3rd Annual Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Memorial Golf Outing at Penn Oaks on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014. Everyone had the opportunity to practice their drives and then enjoy a delicious lunch on the beautiful covered pavilion. The start time was slightly delayed because the skies were darkening, and although the forecast looked sketchy, the caravan of carts set out for their beginning tees after a prayer from Scott Allen.
Within twenty minutes the warning horn was sounded and everyone was brought in to keep them safe as lighting was spotted in the vicinity. After a short downpour, the skies brightened and the sun came out and everyone was sent back out onto the course. The rest of the day was spectacular!
Many friends had the chance to catch up and enjoy the day together on the gorgeous course. Every hole, some more challenging than others, was beautifully groomed and the pace of play kept up as the format was a scramble so the best ball was played each time. The golfers enjoyed a fun and competitive game of “yellow ball” which required that for each shot each member of the foursome take turns hitting the yellow ball. The groups that returned the yellow ball at the end of the 18 holes without losing it, would be put in a drawing for a special prize.
Every golfer had the opportunity to enter a putting contest, purchase mulligans, and there were competitions for longest drive and longest putt as well. Everything was done in fun and there were some great laughs all day, at every hole.
The day finished with an absolutely delicious dinner provided by Penn Oaks. Joey Benzing, a senior at Henderson High School shared with the crowd about his experiences with the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation and his summer at Camp Paradise and how it effected him. Andy Hicks gave an overview about camp and thanked the crowd for their terrific contribution. The Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Memorial Golf Outing raised over $9,000 for Camp Paradise and we are so thankful to Fox Chase Bank Charitable Foundation for being the major sponsor but also to Bob DiGiacomo at UBS for his significant contribution. Thank you to all who came out and participated and to all who sponsored the day and contributed to the Silent Auction. We hope to see you all back next year!
